If you resell model access (a Discord shop, an agency billing clients for tokens, a roleplay proxy, a product with seats), the thing that ends the business is not margin compression. It is the supplier's terms.

OpenAI's Services Agreement, read 2026-10-19: the customer "may not resell or lease access to its Account or any End User Account" (3.1) and may not "buy, sell, or transfer API keys from, to, or with a third party" (3.3g). Anthropic's Commercial Terms: no reselling "except as expressly approved by Anthropic" (D.4). Both allow a product you build on your own key. Neither allow handing their key or account on. Do it anyway and every customer downstream goes dark the day the account does.

A key per customer
I run UplinkSwitch, a prepaid gateway where the contract is with Uplink Switch LLC under our own terms, and the console is built for it:
 

• One key per customer, named and shown once. Pause, rename or revoke at any time; a revoked key stops working within 60 seconds.
  
• A monthly spend limit per key. Over that, the request gets 402 monthly_limit_reached; the counter resets on the 1st. The limit is the customer's plan.
  
• A model allows-list per key (403 scope_denied for everything else), an expiry, and per-key requests- and tokens-per-minute limits.
  
• An alias like prod-chat that customers put in their config. Re-point it once and every customer is on the new model.
  
• A signed receipt for every non-streamed answer naming the model and the charge, and a signed monthly statement with totals per key, so you invoice every customer from one file.
  
• A public daily check that each model is the model it says (same prompt every day, token-count fingerprint): uplinkswitch.ai/proof
  

The margin
Per million tokens, input / output, the developer's list in brackets:
 

• Claude Sonnet 5.5: $1.20 / $3 ($2 / $10)
  
• GPT-6.1 Sol: $0.60 / $3 ($2 / $10)
  
• Kimi K3: $0.90 / $4.50 ($3 / $15)
  
• DeepSeek V4 Pro: $0.75 / $1.19 ($1.32 / $3.96)
  
• GLM 5.3: $0.3276 / $1.03 ($1.09 / $3.43)
  

One customer sending 1,000 chat turns a day (2,000 in / 500 out) for 30 days costs $117 here on Sonnet 5.5 and $270 at Anthropic's list. The gap is the room you have. 93 chat models and 95 media models on one key, every one answers the OpenAI format, prepaid from $10, no subscription, and each top-up locks your prices for 30 days.

If you would rather not run billing at all: gift-card packs (1 to 50 codes, $10 to $500 each) that customers redeem into their own accounts, or a referral link that pays you 10% of their top-ups for 12 months.
