You can remove a person's name from a document, blur something in a photo, or encrypt a file before sending it. None of that necessarily removes the information surrounding the file.
That information is called metadata.
Metadata is simply data about data. It can describe when a file was created, what device created it, who edited it, where a photo was taken, or which software was used. Most of it exists for legitimate reasons, but it can reveal more than people expect.
For anyone interested in privacy or OPSEC, metadata is worth understanding because it is easy to overlook. The file itself may be harmless, while the information attached to it tells a completely different story.
