Well, every user knows what they're getting into, right? I speculate that almost everyone has enough common sense to be careful when dealing with posts from a banned account

This is a really good idea since malware users still have their threads open, and scammers olso have their shop in threads.  

100% agree. I think it would be better to have some kind of watermark in the post for threads started by the banned user so that future users know that the user was banned? This will caution people that this user has been banned.
